Crisis successfully managed

Emergency effectively oversaw In todays world, there are many flourishing worldwide organizations. On this task, it will show Zara, which is one of the best design organizations, including brief history, advertise passage and Zaras systems so as to understanding the exhibition of Zara. Zara ,which is a greatest retail chain of Inditex Group, is a Spanish Company. The Inditex Group, which comprises of Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Oysho, Uterqã ¼e, Stradivarius and Bershka, is claimed by Amancio Ortega. The administrative center is situated in La Coruã ±a, Galicia,Spain where its first store was built up. Be that as it may, Zara worked in its residential market and extended their market to be internationalized in 1980. In the last time of nineteenth century, Zara extended its stores to Portugal, USA and France separately. These days there are almost 2,000 stores in 74 nations (Annual Report, 2009). Moreover, the market passage of Zara can be separated into 3 stages incorporating being the newcomer in the household market and global market, a quick development in an overall market and beginning on the web store. Initially, Zara directed its business in Spain and extend its household advertise from 1975 to 1988 and afterward in last year, Zara began having a way to deal with Portugal which was the neighbor nation. Also, the stores were established in USA and France. There has been a noteworthy extension everywhere throughout the world since 1997. By 2000, Zara stores started to work together around Europe and its stores was established in Costa Rica, Indonesia, Philippines and Monaco in 5 years after the fact. This year Zara open the new market which is Indian market to arrive at the huge number of clients. Finally, In September 2010, Zara began online store in Spain, the UK, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France. The clients can buy the things that are selling at Zara outlets by visiting its site and have two decisions to get the things which are get up at store and postal conveyance. The other favorable position for clients is to return and trade the things inside 30 days. As of late, Apple have been propelled the utilizations of iPhone and iPad all together that it will be progressively advantageous for the clients to buy Zaras items (Apple, 2010). Moreover, Zara online store was reached out to Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg in November 2010. In 2011, this online help will be done in USA, South Korea, Candyland, Boracay and Canada (Inditex, 2010). Zaras systems As a matter of first importance, this part will portray about the methodology of Zara by utilizing SWOT examination which is to comprehend the elements of Zara. Quality Zara has its long notoriety and numerous sorts of items. Zara has generally stores the world over. Zara has its own processing plants so as to lessen the cost, control the quality and amount. The possibility of its staffs is current and in vogue. Along these lines, after Zara discharges its item. It can react the need of clients. Shortcoming If there should be an occurrence of such a large number of stores, the expense of organization is higher than its rivals. The other point is absence of reasonable Public Relations. Opportunity Life pattern of European and American individuals offer priority to the style. Therefore, they change their outfits normally. Because of globalization, the customers can get data advantageously and it affects the course of Zara. Besides, the extension of Zara will be simpler. Danger The primary issue of Zara is its items can duplicate effectively and rapidly. Zara has numerous contenders the two its old and new business people. Despite the fact that there are numerous stores the world over, it additionally faces the dangers, for example, ways of life, socialization, societies in various regions. Second, Zara has the great execution on account of its key elements. The things of Zara has been created by own manufacturing plants and re-appropriate in certain parts. As a result, the quality and amount can be controlled while its principle rivals which are HM and Gap are utilizing global re-appropriating situated in Asia to deliver their items. After the innovative staffs of this organization finish their plan drafts, they will send them straightforwardly to plants in order to fixing and cutting in about fourteen days. The last advance is to send the things back to the organization to check and pack before shipping to the household and worldwide chain stores. Likewise, contrasting and HM and Gap, Zara controls its stores all the more effectively and the quantity of stores expanded drastically than different contenders. Despite the fact that HM and Gap stores have been extended by their own organizations, Zara has extended business by giving its establishment to different nations. In spite of the fact that it is seen that the promoting is a fundamental showcasing instrument for HM and Gap, Zara spends its capital on opening new stores and it offers priority to the store area. (Fan, Y. what's more, Lopez, C., 2009) Third, taking a gander at the insights of Zaras execution, in 2007 Zara deals were à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢ ¬6.26bn and the benefits of Zara rose by 25% to à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢ ¬1.25bn, representing around 66% of the Inditex Groups all out incomes of à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢ ¬9.43bn. The deals of Zaras parent organization rose 9%, representing à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢ ¬2.218bn ( £1.7bn) in the first multi month in quite a while money related year, while there were à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢ ¬2.169bn in Gaps deals and Gaps incomes diminished by 10%. Plus, Inditex Group had surpassed HM for multi year. Accordingly, it turns into the greatest attire chain stores in Europe (Guardian, 2008). As per the two years after the fact, there was an expansion in business space of the Inditex Group by 8%. In any case, Zara deals despite everything represented practically 67% of the Inditex Groups. Aside from that, a net development of Zara was consistent at around 4%-6% in return rates, and there was a 5% development in Earnings before premium and expenses (EBIT) (Inditex Annual Report, 2009). From one viewpoint, Gaps deal dropped marginally to $14.2bn in 2009 (Gap, Inc. Yearly Report, 2009). Along these lines, Zara was more fruitful than HM and Gap. End Despite the fact that Zara has just been effective in the worldwide market, it despite everything need to improve and upgrade its systems since they ought to be forward-thinking strategies. From my possibility, there are 3 different ways of vital turns of events. In any case general methodologies, because of lacking of ads, Zara should change its image by utilizing verbal exchange since it is the most straightforward approach to build turnovers and it is likewise promote in the worldwide market. Another recommendation is working locally, for example, sizes, sorts of texture, the taste and desire for purchasers in order to reaction their requirements. Individuals who live in various territories on the planet have various tastes and desires. Additionally, Zara ought to expand its interest in Asia which has more modest number of contenders than America and Europe. Accordingly, Zara will diminish the expense of item conveyance. The recurrence of structure new items ought to be two times every month so they will be in design. Next, the key administration in all stores ought to be created. For instance, utilizing Radio-recurrence distinguishing proof (RFID) is simpler for continuing, setting, moving and forestalling the loss of items. Inferable from empowering the clients, Zara don't have to hold all things. The impediment of items will actuate the need of clients. At long last, since E-trade business, Zara should bolster and put resources into web based shopping rather than the stores which are not fruitful. The something else that Zara ought to do is client relationship the executives if there should arise an occurrence of keeping standard clients records and giving them unique offers. The last procedure is beginning working with union so as to convey its products quicker and fulfill the online clients.

Friends, See You Again!

Friends, See You Again! It has been three weeks since  I came to school without seeing those familiar faces. I miss my older friends a lot, and I would love to share my experience during commencement week back in May. This May, two of my friends graduated from Illinois  and continued their study in graduate schools. It was my first time attending a commencement, and I really had a lot of feelings. The speech by Mr. Huber, called “Find a Better Way,” was great, but I found the student speech during Sociology convocation especially impressive. Every friend of mine knows that my dream majors are majors like English Literature because I love reading and writing. In her speech “Light It Up,” Sana Singh showed her love of  Sociology and why she thought it was a great majorâ€"because it studies the operation of the whole society and is just as important as the majors north  of Green Street (College of Engineering) and south of Gregory Street (College of Business). She considers the knowledge she learned in Sociology things that light her up, which might be the same feeling shared by other students at the convocation. Her touching speech made me cry a little bit because I did not choose to learn things I truly love. However, I am grateful that I still have the habit to read and passion to write. Presentation and hooding of different degrees’ candidates were sweet as well. After years of studying, students got what they deserved and everyone wished them  bright futures. It’s hard to imagine myself at commencement two years later, and the only thing I hope is that I will not regret every effort I made at  Illinois. Before and after the commencement, I took a lot of photos with my friends. We designed quite a lot different poses and I really cherish this moment. On the Quad, near “Grainger Bob,” under that oak tree, inside Armory 101 (which we had a weekly club meeting) and of course we had to  take a picture in front of Alma Mater. Even though there was  a quite long line before her, we still waited for about an hour to get that picture. During commencement week, Alma Mater also wore blue  academic robes. We are all from different areas of  China and couldn’t see each other too often. During commencement  week, I got to meet my friends’ parents and have dinner with them. It’s just lovely to hear their funny stories from childhood and dreams about future. I wish all my friends a great and bright future. I will miss you guys. Please come and visit during breaks! Street Art Is Visual Art - 2446 Words

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheatpasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock On sculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms urban art, guerrilla art, post-graffiti and neo-graffiti are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts. Traditional spray-painted graffiti artwork itself is often included in this category, excluding territorial graffiti or pure vandalism. Artists who choose the streets as their gallery are often doing so from a preference to communicate directly with the public at large, free from perceived confines of the formal art world. Street artists sometimes present socially relevant content infused with esthetic value, to attract attention to a cause or as a form of art provocation. Common variants include adbusting, subvertising and other culture jamming, the abolishment of private property and reclaiming the streets. Legislation and Commercial Obligations

Question: Discuss about the Legislation and Commercial Obligations. Answer: Introduction Refer to the tenancy case study of Sally and her landlord at Alberta, the guideline fixed for this purpose by the authority is known as Laws for Landlords and Tenants in Alberta. This Act is providing guideline in different aspects of tenancy matter both for tenants and landlords about their rights, duties and other commercial obligations. This case study had emphasized in different issues of a) what Sally should do prior to signing the lease agreement, b) validity of the damage deposit taken by landlord from Sally for the rental and c) the non-maintenance of coveted level of heating system in the premises rented by Sally by the landlord(Servicealberta, 2015). Duties of Sally before signing the lease agreement As per Residential Tenancy Act or RTA of Alberta, there is provision of an inspection report before the agreement is signed. This inspection report is also called in-inspection and is done by both landlord and tenant and produced in written form depicting the condition of the premises which is being rented with the features of then condition of the premises. This inspection report is compulsory for both landlord and tenant and is to be submitted within one week of the tenant moving in. This report is to be signed by the landlord or his authorized representative with the acknowledgement of the tenant confirming the condition of the premises and the same is to be handed over to the tenant. (Landlordandtenant, 2017). As per the case study, the landlord had taken two months rent of $ 2,000 on account of damage deposit. This is not as per the standard law of damage deposit which restricts the landlord to accept damage deposit of only one months rent. In this case, the rent agreed upon is $ 1,000, and the landlord has to abide by this rule by accepting $ 1,000 only on account of damage deposit. Moreover the landlord has to pay interest to the tenant on the deposit with duly signed receipt of the same deposit. (Landlordandtenant, 2017). Heating issue of the premises As per the case study, Sally had found that the temperature level of the premises is not maintained as per the standard set by RTA. During the month of September Sally had entered the rented house and she had found that the heating system was not up to the mark with 12 degrees Celsius which is not at par with the standard fixed by RTA of Alberta during September. Expected level of temperature maintenance should be 22 degree Celsius. The landlord had imposed the condition that the small holes in the walls are to be repaired by her and only then he would take necessary steps to repair the heating system for maintenance of desired level of temperature in the house as per law. The liability of the landlord towards heating system of the premises is to ensure maintenance of temperature level at 22 degree Celsius irrespective of any preconditions like repairing of small holes on the walls by Sally(Austlii, 2017). Conclusion Although there are all areas covered for tenants and landlords regarding rights and duties of them through RTA, Alberta, it is the preliminary duties of the tenants to be aware of these rules and regulations. Unfortunately tenants are not so sensible regarding these aspects and have to bear the consequences for odd eventualities. References: Austlii. (2017, January 17). 2pacs Greatness Essays

2pacs Greatness Essays 2pacs Greatness Essay 2pacs Greatness Essay The Don of Rap People often complain about how obnoxious hip/hop and rap are. However, those same people that claim these things have not heard the beauty or rawness of what rap truly stems from, emotion. Tupac Amaru Shakur brings an emotion in his music and through that emotion he brings a heavy influence to the listener; everything from his deep, distinct vocals to his poetic words, not to mention his monumental beats and memorable music. Thus making Tupac Shakur the best rapper to have ever lived. However not everyone believes this. Some people believe that rappers such as The Notorious B. I. G. and Eminem have qualified themselves as the best of all time. Some even believe that Tupac is not the best because he has a limited amount of music because of his death in 1996, preventing production of his music. There are also those who think that Tupac flip flops too much from east coast to west coast and his glorification of violence and abuse of women. The fact of the matter is that what Tupac said and rapped about had â€Å"thug-life† as a basis for rap a career; however, someone would have to listen to his music to see that there was more than violence but rather love. In regards to another rapper being better than Tupac, one would have to look at arguably his closest competition. The Notorious B. I. G and Eminem are arguably the closest. There is a list of things that make a rapper great. That list consists of combining lyrical genius with an emotional voice, and whether or not they can collaborate those two things with memorable music. There is also something else that needs to be brought to the table when labeling whether a rapper is great or not and that is when there is a dominant, unique quality, something special that can set her or him apart from the rest of the field. In Tupac’s case it was his ability to write Shakespearean-like poetry. In Tupac’s compilation of poetry in The Rose That Grew From Concrete, in a poem called â€Å"In the Event of My Demise†, he clearly let’s the reader know what he stands for, â€Å"In the event of my demise when my heart can beat no more I hope I die for a principle or a belief that I had lived for†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (p. 150). Furthermore in an interview on May 8, 2008 with Emmy winner Thom Sharp, who is currently my music teacher at CSUF, when asked how he would describe Tupac’s music, he said, â€Å"It is simply talented poetry. This is that emotion which he is capable of triggering in the reader or listener. He is essentially saying that whatever purpose he had lived for he hopes he brings with him in death because in his eyes that is a logical death and that his life had meaning and brought meaning to others. The question now is simply, â€Å"does Tupac accomplish these things? à ¢â‚¬ Yes he does and it stems from the life that he lead and what he went through. The life Tupac lead also set him apart from the other ‘thugs’ that surrounded him. Tupac is the only rapper who makes the listener feel like they are in the situation that he is portraying, whatever that may be. Emmit Price, an ethnomusicologist of Northeastern University asserted in the Harvard Gazette on April 17, 2003 , â€Å"Tupac as a prolific artist driven by a terrible sense of urgency who struggled to unify mind, body, and spirit. † Price commented further, â€Å"He was also very similar to the rest of us-a work in progress. † Price is essentially saying that Tupac is on our level and wants us to feel that personal connection through the unification that he struggles with. This is an interesting statement and holds truth but more than that it is an important aspect as to why he is the best ever. Even though listeners are not on Tupac’s level in a literal sense, they are mentally. He gets personal with the listener and that is something that his fans thrive off of, that personal relationship that the listener feels with Tupac. To those that believe that Tupac has a limited amount of music they are surely mistaken and simply uninformed. Ever since Tupac’s death in 1996, Afeni Shakur decided to do something about her son’s talent. According to 2paclegacy. com, â€Å"Afeni Shakur founded Amaru Entertainment/Records in 1997 as a way to legitimately release the huge catalog of unreleased work he completed before his physical passing. Of all of Tupac’s discography six out of his twelve albums were posthumous, meaning they came after his death. This is in large part because of his mother starting Amaru Entertainment/Records, but maybe more than that the fans that he has gained even after his death. After all he was the perfect example of death being anot her part of life. To prove wrong all those people who say he doesn’t have enough music, he is listed in the Guinness Book of Records 2003, â€Å"as the best-selling rap artist†. It also says, â€Å"US rap legend 2Pac has certified US album sales of 33. million up to the end of 2001, and has had more hits after his death (at the age of 25 in September 1996) than he amassed when he was alive. † (p. 188). Those staggering numbers should quiet anyone that says he does not have enough music because apparently the people of the world can not get enough of him, before and after death. To illustrate further his role and importance in ‘gangsta’ rap, in a recent survey on the campus of California State University, Fullerton and at the Block of Orange, 68% of all respondents when asked who there favorite gangsta rapper was, if they had to choose would be Tupac Shakur. This just proves that his music and spirit live on to this day through his always growing fan base. In regards to Tupac flip flopping too much from east coast to west coast and not being true to his â€Å"hoods†, this is what makes his greatness shine. The funny thing is that he does not disrespect other hoods, rather recognizes them and feels for their everyday struggles. He makes this evident in a song called â€Å"My Block (Remix)† off his album â€Å"Stay True†, â€Å"to all my blocks out there†¦Baltimore, The Jungle( in Marina City), Los Angeles, yeah that’s my block too. That is an important aspect to being a gangsta rapper in earning respect from everyone around him or her. That is how they build their reputation and gain their fans and with that one can and would see the haters fade away. That was his innate ability to just bring people of all types of backgrounds together. That is a talent and something that was all started from Tupac. When referring about his violence and abuse of women in his lyrics, one has to take a step back and put things in perspective. In the Harvard Gazette on April 17, 2003, from the academic symposium entitled, â€Å"All Eyes on Me: Tupac Shakur and the Search for the Modern Folk Hero†, and the article by Ken Gewertz, a member of that audience that day asked a panelist about the issue of violence and abuse of women in his lyrics and Mark Anthony Neal of the State University of New York, Albany replied with, â€Å"Well he’s (Tupac) a walking contradiction, but because of that, he makes the process of being an intellectual accessible to ordinary people. This is a very valid point and just goes to prove the point of why he is the best. He shows he is the best because he wanted and wants even in death for his music to be for everyone and anyone; from the man on the corner working for a dime, or the business man in L. A. sitting at his desk working on his next big engineering project. It is for those people, it is for all of the people in this world. Tupac’s experience is also something that made him the best; the word experience meaning life of the streets and the struggles and pain that he had to go through to be the best. All the fame that he gained through rap all came with a price. What other rapper or even person can say that they were arrested a dozen times in the same year, served a prison sentence in the same year and released a multi platinum record while serving that prison sentence in the same year. Here is the answer: no one! Tupac was a leader and had many followers. Although he is known for that mentality of being ‘solo’ and ‘him against the world’, but what does one expect from an individual who came from a household with a mom as a crack addict and no father? He took it upon himself to make something of him self. And in this world and in this time of age there can be no better role model, no greater rapper, than someone who rose up against so many adversities when it is so easy to just quit. From the police to the fame, it seemed as if he couldn’t be left alone. His yearning to be left alone is what ultimately led to his death. With his death also came a void for someone to fill in the rap industry, to take the torch and carry it. However, there has been a struggle for that leader/icon of rap to be produced since Tupac’s death in 1996. It is almost like he is still carrying that torch with him still on his back. He is still the icon and is still the greatest and most influential rapper of all time.

The Magna Carta Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

The Magna Carta - Essay Example Historical records stated that King John considered these rights granted to the nobility are done under duress (National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, p. 1). Until these days, the Magna remained significant for human rights advocacies and for its defenders because this was the first document which challenged the monarchical power of the King and systemically becomes the legal foundation against feudal relations -- that ‘no man should be above the law (National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, p. 1).’ The document expressly stated, "No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land (National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, p. 1)." The Magna Carta has therefore dismantled the king’s feudal control over lands in England and its professed power of such elitist rule of the hierarchy where barons directly report to the King in the performance of their responsibilities (National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, p. 1). ... 1; Walenta, 2010, p. 1). At the utmost, these principles are embed in universal declaration of human rights and in the Constitution of United States of America. Mulligan (2004) opined that the Magna Carta also ushered positive reform in legislation of laws and paved for the restoration of legal and political institutions after that tragic period of civil strife and social degeneration brought by social inequities and tyrannical control (pp. 41-65). This was affirmed by King Henry I and those subsequent rulers. Expert scholars considered the document as the best enduring legacy to humankind because those principles strengthened the institutionalization of universal concepts of legal doctrines on judicial procedures that aided in the protection and promotion of civil rights. Franklin D. Roosevelt has succinctly expressed in his 1941 inaugural address when he stated that the Magna Carta is the written document that integrated the democratic aspiration in human history (National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, p. 1). When the Declaration of Independence was sealed and signed as the American Charters of Freedom in 1776, the great Fathers recognized the Magna Carta as the historical context in asserting their liberty from King George III and the English parliament (National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, p. 1). They honoured that meeting of 40 barons and King John 561 years earlier at Runnymede, now home of the Windsor Castle, where barons finally considered themselves as freemen and later became an inspiration for Americans. They have likewise earned the reconfirmation of Henry I’s Coronation Oath and hence limited the King’s access to resources and funds. At that time, this charter was only

Marketing in construction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words

Marketing in construction - Essay Example (2001) it is revealed that ‘marketing implementation emerges as an organizations adaptive response to day-to-day market events that is rarely scripted by plans’ (Sashittal et al., 2001, 50). In other words, the influence of the organizational environment – both external and internal - on a firm’s marketing plans can be significant. The ability of a firm to respond to the needs of its market depends on a series of factors, like the employees’ skills, the funds and the technology available as well as the position of the competitors. The needs and the characteristics of the industrial sector in which a firm operates are also likely to have an important role when having to choose among the marketing policies that will be used by a particular firm. Current paper focuses on the marketing plans used by Bellway plc, a firm operating in the British construction industry. Currently, the number of firms operating in the British construction industry has been estimated to 250000. In order to understand the effectiveness of marketing policies used in the specific industry it is necessary to describe the characteristics of this sector. In accordance with a report published by the Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (2009) the construction industry ‘embraces the construction materials and products; suppliers and producers; building services manufacturers, providers and installers; contractors, sub-contractors, professionals, advisors and construction clients and those organisations that are relevant to the design, build, operation and refurbishment of buildings’ (BERR, 2009, online article). In the construction industry there are specific standards that need to be met by marketers being involved in a specific marketing plan: a) the effects of its method/ material on the environment must be thoroughly examined in advance, b) the quality of the work is of high importance – the building under construction has to

Social Class and Education Essay

Social Class and Education Essay Education is a significant institution in our society as it serves to fulfil many functions and provide opportunities for children. One important role that education plays is carrying out the process of secondary socialization where the education system teaches children the norms and values of society in a way that the family cannot. Education performs certain functions such as providing children with skills needed for work, learning about religious and moral beliefs, national languages and also about the history of the nation. Therefore it can be seen that education performs an important role in childrens lives by socializing them into the future members of society and teaching them about the values of success and achievement which enables them to be open to many opportunities in society (Fulcher Scott, 2007). However education combined with social class can create inequalities for children in their lives and this study of inequality within education remains a key area of study in the sociology of education and is also of great importance in shaping educational policies in Britain. Research has shown that inequalities in the education system do still exist in Britain where it has been shown that the higher a persons social class the higher the levels of achievement an individual is more likely to achieve. It is these types of findings which have led to a large array of study about educational inequalities and why they still persist in Britains education system. These inequalities can affect children from lower classes and their life chances through a variety of ways such as through micro and macro causes in society which will be analysed in turn (Haralambos Holborn, 2007) Macro Causes We will first look at the various macro causes in the wider structures of society which causes educational inequalities for children. These include material deprivation. 1. Material Deprivation This theory highlights the importance of material goods and resources needed for educational achievement. Material deprivation has been defined as including ‘poverty, overcrowding, ill health in parents, child neglect and lack of basic amenities in the home and neighbourhood (Silver,1980,p40). It is these factors which seem to affect children from working class backgrounds due to low incomes in the family which prevents them from achieving at school as they lack the basic resources such as books, correct diet and study space in the home needed to succeed in their studies. Also as many of these lower working class families are seen to be in poverty as evidence shows that a high percentage of children participate in part time employment after school hours to improve their situation at home and to relieve some of the financial pressure off their parents . This leads to children aiming to cope with earning money through paid work but also finding the time to study for their school w ork and gain qualifications (Heaton Lawson,1996). Furthermore Halsey Heath and Ridge (1980)examined reasons for inequalities existing in education for the working class and found that middle class children were more likely to go to school and continue on to higher education than the working class and this was partly due to lack of money and income in these households causing differential educational achievement compared to children from affluent backgrounds. However they did argue that material factors was not the only primary factor causing underachievement as children from materially deprived backgrounds have succeeded, they believed that cultural factors such as parental attitudes and encouragement played a key role in childrens educational attainment at school ( Abercombie, Warde Deem,2001). We will now look at how cultural factors can have an impact in creating inequalities for children. 2. Cultural Deprivation Cultural deprivation has been defined ‘as a situation in which parents provide a child with little in the way of linguistic stimulation and take minimal interest in their education and when they have limited opportunity for play or other experiences which are helpful to their intellectual development- in short when their environment is barren and unstimulating ( Silver,1980,p40). This theory recognises that instead of material factors causing inequalities it is the cultural factors in fact that causes working class children to perform differently in schools compared to their middle class peers. It is argued that working class children are disadvantaged because working class subculture fails to transmit the correct norms, values and skills needed for high achievement in education (Fulcher Scott,2007,p323). Also low value is placed is placed on educational achievement and working class subculture focuses on immediate gratification where they are encouraged to leave school early and earn money rather than opting for deferred gratification which middle class adopt where education is seen as a path for success later on in life where they can enjoy the benefits of having a high paid job and high statuses (Henslin, 1996,p 190). J W B Douglas study of ‘ The home and the school (1962) supports the cultural deprivation theory. Douglas conducted a longitudinal study in 1962 of 5,362 British children and followed their educational careers up to the age of 16. He divided the students into different social class groupings and found that there was different variations in educational achievement between students who had similar academic ability but came from different social classes. He found that within the ‘high ability group the majority of the lower working class children left school in the fifth year compared to only 10 percent from the upper middle class. Douglas argued that the single most important factor causing these differences in achievement between middle and working class children is the level of parental interest and encouragement for their childrens education. He argues that working class parents showed little interest in childrens progress at school whereas middleclass parents encouraged children to do well at school, continue in further education and also paid more attention to their childrens progress through frequent meeting s with teachers. However overall although we can see that parental interest can effect childrens attainment it cannot be viewed as the only factor in explaining class differences in educational achievement. Blackstone Mortimore (1994) argued that working class parents were unable to attend parents meetings due to demands of their manual jobs and also working class parents try to encourage their children in education but they lack the certain social skills that middle class parents occupy in order for their children to gain advantages from the school system. So therefore it is important to note that many other factors play a role in creating inequalities for working class children and also that many culturally deprived behaviours could also be due to a lack of money (Haralambos Holborn, 2006, p737-739).

Precarious Assumptions :: Research Essays Term Papers

Precarious Assumptions It is easy to look back on an event and judge people's motives and consequential actions, deciding or at least speculating about whether or not they acted reasonably. But, few people can step back and examine their impulse while making a decision. On January 13, 1898, French writer Emile Zola attempted this when he interrupted the cry "Death to the Jews!" sounding from mobs of Frenchmen, and wrote the famous expository article, "J'Accuse" (Burns 104). The letter addressed to the President of the French Republic, foretold that a scandal the government left unsettled, The Alfred Dreyfus Affair, would haunt France as one of the most shameful events in its history. His motivation, he wrote, had "but one goal: that light be shed, in the name of mankind which has suffered so much as has the right to happiness" (Burns 102). The outright accusations Zola publicized assured him a cell in jail, but only for a short time for his candor also exposed the fiasco to the previously naÃÆ'Â ¯ve publ ic. Despite his immediate influence on the events of the republic, it was not until 1998, that a French president formally acknowledged Zola's courage and insight. On the centenary of "J'Accuse," President Jacques Chirac wrote his own letter thanking the man who "rose up against the lie, the baseness, and the cowardice. Shocked at the injustice against Captain Dreyfus, whose only crime was to be Jewish, [he] launched his famous cry. . .that. . . struck like lightning and, in a few hours, changed the destiny of the Affair. Truth was on the march" (Burns 191). Even the words of the trusted French author Emile Zola obliged a century of reflection before inspiring the adulation of President Jacques Chirac. Had Zola remained indifferent, another Frenchman may have taken up Dreyfus' cause. But if not, could France have remained shrouded by an injurious lie? What historical price do we pay when fear and prejudice mingle? My heart sank when I received an Instant Message three nights before Halloween from a high school friend who now attends Columbia University: Two Arab men were apprehended yesterday at a Costco in New Jersey after a suspicious employee phoned the police on the men who were attempting to buy $5,000 worth of candy. One of the men escaped, but the one detained was found to be in the country illegally. Josh and I agreed that if it were true, the incident would make it on the news, actually, that a reporter would most likely have made it to the New Jersey Costco before the Police.

Internship Application Essay

I write to apply for a position in this internship program. My strong commitment to my works has been demonstrated to my numerous volunteer experiences in the community and at university. Throughout my degree, I volunteered weekly at local primary schools where I taught grade 4 and 5 mathematics. Seeing the students light up with excitement while participating in a science experiment or the student who has struggled with a mathematical concept finally understand what to do has been immeasurably rewarding for me. Beyond the rewards, these experiences have taught me how to tailor my approach to the students’ needs and effectively communicate concepts to a group, skills I know would serve me well in my future jobs. I have a genuine interest in learning as much as possible about a career in business and finance and would view any task put before me as a positive learning experience. Through my study as a mathematics student, I have proven my ability to maintain high curiosity, learn complicated things and not giving up easily. Proficient in statistical, business data analysis, and excels in collaborative team-based environments, I believe it is a perfect way to utilise my skills to solve business and financial problems. My primary goal in beginning a career in business and finance is to acquire as much experience as possible. Not only I hope to deepen my knowledge in current business and financial worlds, but I would also hope to acquire some of the practical skills that I will need to be better equipped for this field. I believe that working in business and finance, I would have the privilege to appreciate that everything in the world somehow affects my works. I would hope that this internship would provide an opportunity to build a working relationship with leaders in the field from whom I could gain valuable knowledge. I am certain that any experience from this internship would prove to be indispensable to me in accomplishing my future goals.

Reflection - 1650 Words

Ian-Bradley Tancred This essay analyses and describes what reflection is and how it supports your personal and professional learning. It elaborates upon how and why recognizing your strengths and weaknesses are important and how they can enhance lifelong learning. It describes what arguments and assertions are, what the differences are between them and which one is better. Debnath describes reflection as a means of self-examination to learn from knowledge and experiences which will help transform a person s reactions and behaviours to similar events in the future. (Debnath, 2010) Schà ¶n explains reflection can be used at two different times: reflection-in-action and a reflection-on-action. The reflective models I use most are Gibb s Model of Reflection: Learning by doing (1988) and Rolfe et al. (2001). Gibb’s reflective model is a six-stage cycle analysing an event from what happened to what the action plan is. This allows for a good analysis of the event/problem and what needs to be done to improve. Rolfe’s reflective model is a three-stage model and has been identified as a good toolkit when used in reflective practice. It is also good for both novice and advanced practitioners (Bishop and Blake, 2007). Gibb’s and Rolfe’s models have common insights, namely the description of the event, analysis of what has occurred and the action plan. Rolfe’s three-step model begins with What? This is the entire description of the event occurring., The second step involves the practitioner constructing personal theories and knowledge about the situation by asking So What? The practitioner asks what they have learnt from the situation, what impact does it have on them, e.g. leadership skills, etc. what could they change to make it better and what broader issues have been highlighted by the event?
